In an island wide operation this year, as many as 2,577 drivers who drink and drive were caught. Singapore police set up road blocks in many places like Newton, Bukit Timah, Chinatown areas to fence the cluster of entertainment outlets and made the drivers take a breathalyser test. The men who failed to meet the minimum requirements were arrested. If convicted, these men will be disqualified from driving for at least 12 months. First time offenders could be fined for about S$1,000 to S$5,000 or face being jailed for 6 months. Repeat offenders get a maximum fine of S$30,000 and mandatory jail term of up to 3 years.
The public has been reminded not to drink if they drive for the safety of themselves and others. A breathalyser test requires a driver to 'breath' into a device and it calculates the alcohol content in the breath of the driver. Even if the driver may not exceed the legal limit, if he is unable to control his vehicle or spotted to drive recklessly, he may be charged too.
